Duty Officer Introduction

Duty Officers (DOFFs or DOs) are a game mechanic beside space and ground combat. Duty officers become available to you on Level 11 and can be sent on Duty Officer Assignments or be assigned to your Active Space / Ground Duty Roster.
They can improve your performance in combat and earn you experience, items and dilithium. Many fleet projects also require duty officers to be completed.
The duty officer system is accessed via the duty officer button under the minimap.

Roster

The roster is the list of duty officers you currently own. Officers used for assignments are drawn from this general roster. By default you can have up to 100 duty officers on the roster, although you can buy more slots for Zen. [Personal opinion: I would recommend you get the 100 slot extension once you run out of room; 200 doffs are a good number to have and you don't waste Zen on the smaller packages]

Active Duty Roster

You can place five duty officers on active duty for each space and ground tasks. A DOFF placed on active duty will give you a passive bonus for as long as he remains on active duty. The bonus depends on the type of officer (e.g. conn officers, technicians and doctors all provide different boni) and their quality. A purple officer of the provides a higher bonus than a white officer of the same type. Right-clicking in either active duty tab will show more information on the selected DOFF including the magnitude of the bonus.
Additional notes:
- DOFFs on active duty are not available for duty officer assignments.
- Only three DOFFs of the same specialisation can be placed in either active roster.
- You cannot place the same DOFF on active duty twice, even if you have multiple 'clones'.
- Traits do not affect performance on the active roster, making this a good place to 'store' doffs with undesirable traits but useful abilities
- DOFFs placed on active duty are removed from the normal roster and hence free up room for new duty officers. I.e. you can have 100 officers on your roster and ten more on active duty. To remove a DOFF from active duty you must have room in you roster.

Assignments

Duty officers can be sent on assignments to earn your captain rewards. In brief:
- You have 20 assignment slots so you can have 20 duty officer missions running at any one time
- Some assignment require additional resources (currency or commodities)
- Each assignment requires at least one duty officer (a very few require none)
- Most assignments have better chances of success when the assigned DOFFs have a specific profession or traits (or don't have certain negative traits)
- Using doffs of a higher quality also improves success chances and increases the reward on a critical success (e.g. a purple officer has better chances of the assignment being a critical success and will gain 20% more rewards)
- Assignments can be found in the Assignments tab of the Duty Officer window. Additional assignments can be found under the Department Heads tab.
- Most assignments are found in Sector Space. On some locations there are area-appropriate assignments (e.g. there are a lot of lecture-type assignments available at Starfleet Academy). Some assignments can only be obtained from certain officers (e.g. the security officer on Earth Space Dock and the officers on your own ship).
- If an assignment with a high risk factor fails, officers may be injured or even killed. Injured officers are unavailable ('in sickbay') for several hours. Some assignments also remove officers from your roster (e.g. colonists being settled somewhere).
- Assignments appear more or less randomly. Some are loosely tied to a location or region, while others can be found anywhere at any time. Personal and department head assignments are largely unaffected by your location.
- There are some assignment chains, little story lines for your duty officers to work through. An assignment chain works like any other assignment, but with each assignment completed you advance in the 'story'. Assignment chains often unlock repeatable assignments or special rewards. If you fail a mission in an assignment chain you will still move on to the next mission in that chain.

Typical rewards include:
- Energy credits
- Experience and skill points
- Dilithium
- Commodities or more duty officers (for some assignments)
- Commendation XP

Commendation XP can be viewed in the overview tab. Collect commendation XP to advance through the different commendation ranks, which will reward you with new duty officers or abilities, which can be seen by clicking on the commendation types.

Obtaining Duty Officers

As you level up you will receive additional duty officers. But there are more ways to obtain duty officers:
- From the Exchange (for energy credits)
- From vendors / stores on the Fleet Starbase or in the Reputation System (for dilithium)
- Repeatable assignments from Consulate and Colonisation assignment chains (free)
- From Recruitment assignments (free)

- Officer exchanges (for dilithium)

Recruitment assignments are the best way to obtain more duty officers. To recruit new duty officers, go to the Academy and speak to [NAME]. Select the individual recruitment assignments to start them off. They can be repeated every few days. Additional recruitment assignments are obained from the Andorian, Tellarite and Vulcan officers at the Academy. Similar assignment can also be found in sector space (personal assignments), but they are very rare.
The recruitment assignments reward two officers each. Cultural exchanges reward one officer. The general recruitment assignment rewards five officers but costs 1000 dilithium. I suggest you skip it as it is not worthwhile.
Officer exchanges are also available from the above officers. You can turn in a set of lower-quality duty officers for a single, better officer or turn in a higher-quality duty officer for a set of lower-quality officers. These assignments also cost some dilithium.

The recruitment assignments are very important and you should complete them as much as possible to build an effective cadre. Unwanted officers can always be sold, exchanged or (most preferably) be donated to fleet projects.

The colony assignment chains, which are found in all of the various nebulae and clusters around the edge of the star map, also provide duty officers in the form of the [Cluster] Renown assignment (the final assignment of the chain) and the Support colonisation efforts assignment, which is repeatable and becomes available after the chain is completed.
Both assignment types reward one duty officer. The latter also reward refugees on a critical success. The duty officers awarded in each cluster are the same each time, see below for a complete list.

General advice

- Use your duty officers to the fullest. They will gain you considerable amounts of experience while levelling up. The commendation rewards are also worth getting (better DOFFs and more transwarp destinations).
- Don't rely exclusively on the duty officer recommendations for assignments. In some cases, a high quality duty officer with the wrong specialisation will still give you better chances for a critical success than your best 'experts'. Some assignments are also mildly bugged, e.g. epohh raising where the correct specialists actually give you worse odds than non-specialists.
- Don't neglect your active roster. Choosing the right officers for your playstyle can make life much easier and hugely impacts your ship's and captain's performance in space and on the ground.
- Be on the lookout for assignments with special rewards. You can farm dilithium and rare commodities (for the exchange or personal use) just using your duty officers.
